Capturing all the activities that constitute a Haileybury Rendall School education is always a challenge. However, one thing is certain – there are increasingly numerous opportunities for students and families to find something of interest to connect with.
Capturing all the activities that constitute a Haileybury Rendall School education is always a challenge. However, one thing is certain – there are increasingly numerous opportunities for students and families to find something of interest to connect with.
A proud moment was our recent Year 12 Class of 2024 Graduation Assembly where we celebrated 56 students who completed their secondary schooling journeys Among them, 10 had been part of our Junior School, while Eva and Caitlin enrolled in 2015 (when the School was still Kormilda) as Year 3 students!
Additionally, 26 students, including eight boarders, joined us in Year 7 and complete their entire Secondary School at HRS. Notanly,14 Indigenous students were amongst the graduates. This significant event was shared by many families and friends.
On the other end of the School, the annual Grandparents’ Day was also a resounding success for our ELC families and students.
We also enjoyed the end of year presentation nights for the Stars Foundation and the Clontarf Academy, who support Indigenous boys and girls across the year at HRS, working closely with our staff and students.
We also managed to fit in our annual Auction and Quiz Night which raised almost $15,000. This money will further support sports development at HRS into 2025, provide extra funds for coaches and professional development, as well as more new equipment for all sports and year levels.
The Music Department showcased around 50 students during two nights of recitals featuring singers one evening and instrumental performances the next. There were so many special moments across the two evenings and our music team deserve great credit for all they are doing to develop the talents and opportunities of our students.
Meanwhile, 21 students across three teams were preparing for the Tournament of Minds international finals, which were held in Sydney last weekend. We had one Year 9 team and 2 Junior School teams qualify for this wonderful event. All teams had a great experience in Sydney after months of training and competing.
As many Middle School and Senior School students are complete examinations in Week 5, the action will continue with upcoming House Swimming Carnivals and Wellbeing Week.
Remember to be kind, always do your best, and get involved.

Building Kindness and Justice in our Community
At Haileybury Rendall Early Learning Centre (ELC), we are committed to instilling the values of kindness, respect, and social justice in our young learners. Our social justice initiatives throughout the year allow children to connect with their community, learn about empathy, and understand the importance of helping others. This term, we’ve focused on raising awareness for Day for Daniel, a day dedicated to promoting child safety and protection.
Day for Daniel was established in memory of Daniel Morcombe, a young boy from Queensland whose life was tragically cut short. The day aims to educate children and communities about child safety, empowering young people to recognise and respond to potentially harmful situations. Across Australia, schools and families participate in various activities to honour Daniel's memory and to reinforce messages of safety and awareness.
To mark Day for Daniel, our ELC community wore red, symbolising the message of safety and support. The children enjoyed red ice cups—a treat that also served as a conversation starter about the day’s significance. Additionally, we organised a raffle and promotion of online donations, with all proceeds going to Day for Daniel foundation. The foundation advocates for and educates others around child safety. The children took pride in being part of this initiative, learning that even small actions can contribute to a big cause. Currently we have raised over $2100 with fundraising efforts not closing for another week. What an extraordinary effort from our small community at the ELC, its heartwarming and so inspiring.
Through these hands-on experiences, our young learners are becoming more aware of their role in building a safe, supportive, and kind community. We’re proud to support Day for Daniel and similar programs as part of our mission to foster social awareness and compassion in our ELC.

Celebrating achievements and new beginnings
The last two weeks have been incredibly busy in the Junior School with
after-school programs in full swing. Students have also completed their
swimming lessons, which they thoroughly enjoyed, and now we eagerly anticipate
the swimming carnival on Friday. In addition to the physical activities,
students are busy with final assessments as we prepare for the end of the year.
A highlight of this period was the participation of 21 students from both
Middle School and Junior School in the Tournament of Minds in Sydney. It was an
amazing experience for everyone involved. With three teams competing, our
students showcased exceptional creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving
skills, truly excelling in what they love to do.
While the competition was challenging, our students performed admirably and
received praise from the judges. The trip was also enriched by visits to iconic
Sydney landmarks like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. We're incredibly
proud of how well they represented the school!
Our orientation sessions from Preschool to Transition have begun, and we are
very excited to welcome these students and families to the Junior School for
2025!
We are all very excited in the lead-up to Wellbeing Week, which is taking place in Week 6. Students move into their new year levels on Monday with Years 8, 9 & 10 (2025) students participating in a wide range of activities covering the themes of Connect, Move, Reflect, Create, and Action. The major events are workshops with The Man Cave and Flourish Journey; excursions to Casuarina Coastal Reserve and Leanyer Waterpark for Year 8, and Darwin Waterfront for Year 9; Amazing Race for Year 10 (2025); plus dozens of rotation activities designed to engage and excite our students. For any students attending an excursion, please ensure the consent form is completed as per myNotices.
Tutor Group Restructure
After careful consideration, we are pleased to announce a restructure of Tutor Groups from Term 1A onwards. Students will now be in horizontal Tutor Groups with peers of their own year level. Students will be in classes of mixed House groupings, and we are confident the new structure will help students to build on their relationships and feel more comfortable with peers of their age. This will also support the effectiveness of our Personal Excellence (PEX) program, as Tutor Group teachers will run both class groupings. Students can find out their new Tutor Groups on Monday morning by referring to their timetables on myHRS, and printed sheets outside MS/SS Reception.

Farewell to the Class of 2024
In the final two weeks of term, we have seen the Class of 2024 take their last significant steps as Haileybury students, marking an end to their secondary education journey. For our Unit 3/4 students, VCE exams have commenced, bringing both excitement and a sense of finality.
This week, our Stars and Clontarf programs celebrated the achievements of all our students, with a special focus on our departing Year 12s. Wednesday and Thursday nights were dedicated to recognizing their efforts, hard work, and contributions, and the seniors finished the week on a nostalgic note. On Thursday, each Year 12 student honoured their childhood by dressing as they did in a favourite childhood photo, and on Friday, the entire school community gathered for a heartfelt Graduation Assembly to officially farewell the Class of 2024.
A highlight of the final week was Clontarf's Friday Footy, where departing Year 12 students Max, Rahiri, Robin, and Relton took the field for their last games. These senior players, who have been leaders and role models to younger students, received well-deserved recognition from peers and coaches alike as they wrapped up their time on the team.
Congratulations to Year 10 students Sonny, Jaren and Mazlan have been selected to represent the Northern Territory in an Interstate State of Origin Clontarf Football Competition held in Melbourne—marking them as the first Year 10 students to earn a place on the NT team. In addition, Year 12 students Max and Robin have been chosen to represent Clontarf NT, showcasing their talents as some of the best footballers in the Northern Territory. They will compete against top players from Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia in Melbourne, a prestigious opportunity that highlights their skills and dedication.
As the senior school bids farewell to the Class of 2024, we extend our heartfelt congratulations on all they have accomplished. We wish them success in their exams and the very best as they embark on their future ambitions.
We are currently in a time of great anticipation and transition at Boarding. As is usual at this time of the year, our community of students have differing priorities yet generally there is a shared focus directed towards exams, future schooling and vocational outcomes. We are in the middle of various types of studies and tasks prior to the changes which are just around the corner. It is very pleasing to note that overall, students are absorbing the pressures and challenges related to this time of the year very well.
The symbolism behind events at this stage of the year is quite powerful for our Year 12 students. They have shared in the ceremonies of their Boarding Graduation Dinner, the Graduation Breakfast with fellow Year 12s and the very moving Graduation Assembly. Some are now sitting exams, other senior students are tying off loose ends at school, whilst some of our remote Indigenous students are home with family before their final “rite of passage” in Haileybury Rendall School – the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner; a celebration of years of hard work, grit and determination to succeed when faced with challenges so far away from Country and family.
Term 1A begins next week and so a new year of learning begins, along with opportunities in Boarding. Madjirra House will be used for fee paying students and Year 11 and year 12 Indigenous students in 2025. This provides a different mix of students in this House with the chance to share knowledge, cultures and form strong friendships. It also provides different leadership opportunities both formally via Boarding Prefect positions and the role modelling of appropriate cultures within boarding.
We hope all of our students embrace this time of the year as one of change and opportunity to thrive in the next stage of their schooling or vocational pathways and importantly, their growth as a person.

Year 11 and 12 Vocational Major Students explore CDU's VET opportunities
Last week, Year 11 and 12 Vocational Major students had an exciting opportunity to explore Charles Darwin University (CDU) and discover the diverse pathways available within the VET sector after graduating from Year 12. The visit was an action-packed morning as students toured a variety of departments, including Aquaculture, Horticulture, Plumbing, Electrotechnology, Carpentry, Business, Administration, Healthcare, and Community Services.
Each stop offered a glimpse into the hands-on skills and knowledge required in these industries, sparking interest and inspiring our students to consider different career options. CDU staff members shared valuable insights into each sector, offering guidance on study pathways and the qualifications needed for each field.
The tour concluded with a delicious pizza lunch, where students had the chance to engage in relaxed conversations with staff from the First Nations Student Support team about programs such as the Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) and the Away from Base Program (AFB), which are part of the First Nations Pathways.
The visit provided students with an engaging look at CDU's facilities and the various pathways and programs available to support their educational goals.
Many students found the experience interesting and motivating, as it gave them a clearer vision of the possibilities that await after high school.
We extend our thanks to CDU for hosting our students and giving them this valuable opportunity to think about their future pathways!

Year 9 PE experience
This year was our last year of compulsory PE, and it has been an amazing one. We have had the opportunity to participate a range of sports such as basketball, netball, T-ball, softball, volleyball and badminton.
In the last two weeks, the PE department worked hard to enable the Year 9s to travel off-campus to the Darwin International Tennis Centre to work on our tennis skills which have no doubt improved. Thank you to the instructors for giving us tips on how to improve our skills as well as how to play the sport to the best of our abilities.
As a Year 9 cohort, it has been an amazing year and it is obvious how much our teamwork, sporting skills and effort we put into sports, even the ones we are not familiar with, has improved. So, a massive thankyou to Ms Henriksen, Mr Greenwood, Mr Murphy and Ms McFee for their hard work to make this year one of the best in PE. Also, a big thank you to Mr Gerasimon and Ms Barry for driving the bus for our excursions.

HRS Music Recitals: Celebrating Dedication and Talent
On the evenings of 29 & 30 October, across two venues, HRS proudly hosted our biggest Music Recitals to date. These events were a celebration not only of each performance but of the dedication, enthusiasm, and love for music that each student has brought to life. Every recital showcased the tremendous growth and commitment our young musicians have put into their craft.
The recitals featured a wide range of talents, including vocal performances as well as piano, guitar, trumpet, flute, saxophone, violin, viola, and cello. It was truly inspiring to witness the progress each student has made on their musical journey. Their path to the stage is a testament to their resilience and hard work, and it was a joy to see how far they have come.
A special thank you goes to the dedicated team of teachers and staff who have worked tirelessly to help each student shine. Their support, guidance, and encouragement have been instrumental in bringing out the best in each performer.
And to all who attended one of the three recitals to cheer on our young performers, thank you for joining us to celebrate the artistry and passion of our talented students. We are already looking forward to the next opportunity to witness their growth!
The year 8 Art class has completed their self portraits. They will be displayed in the library. The students used graphite and shading techniques of their Year 8 school photo to achieve fantastic realistic results.

Australian Maths Competition
On Wednesday, 7 August, HRS entered 109 students ranging from Year 3 to Year 12 into the Australian Maths Competition (AMC). The AMC is Australia's longest running maths competition that challenges and engages students in mathematical problem-solving skills.
Of all the students, we had 27 achieve a distinction. This places them in the top 20% of students in their year level. An amazing result!
We also had 8 students achieve a High Distinction in the AMC putting them in the top 3% of all students in their category across Australia! An absolutely outstanding result! These 8 students were spread out across every age group in the AMC.
For our High Distinction students, they attended an NT Awards ceremony at Charles Darwin University on Wednesday, 23 October. This was a wonderful celebration for all NT students who achieved exceptional results in the AMC.
A further congratulations to Bert (Year 5), who achieved the highest score in the whole school.

DBA Indigenous round!
During eek 4 of the Championship Season the Darwin Basketball Association celebrated their Indigenous round of basketball.
One player from each team was awarded a medal for ‘Best on Court’ during that game.
Congratulations to:
Ricco (Year 9)
Kaylanie (Year 9)
Sharifah (Year 7)
Quatisha (Year 8)
Mackenzie (Year 6)
Quatisha was chosen by the referee as the most valuable player during our Division 3 U14 girls game.
The Haileybury Rendall School Swimming Team competed at the School Sport NT Gala Day on Friday, 1 November at the Parap Swimming Pool.
With senior HRS student and local coach Taylia Sheridan showing her exceptional leadership skills in managing and starting all races like a pro, the students backed up her great work with some outstanding performances in the pool. HRS won the Middle School and Senior School points shields for the day and with a squad half the size of the other schools it was a very impressive achievement.
These students are an absolute credit to themselves and should be proud of the hours and hard work they put into training and preparing for both in school and out-of-school competitions.
Stars have already had an action packed start to Term 4 with the hosting of our annual end of year Stars Presentation Awards Night. It was a great turn out of our amazing Stars students, their families and supporting school staff. Leah (Year 10) and Daisha (Year 8) MC'd the event with style and class. The photo slide show had the crowd laughing with big belly laughs and crying with happy tears! Eight lucky and hard-working Stars students were honoured with awards for their commitment to their schooling by having high attendance and excellent academic grades, whilst also honouring students who worked hard to display and uphold the Stars values of Respect, Honesty, Commitment and Pride! Congratulations to all award winners on the night and an even bigger congratulations to the 10 Stars students that graduated Year 12! This year's cohort is the largest group so far with most of our graduates being the first in their families to graduate. What an amazing achievement. Reach for the Stars ladies, the world is yours!!
Makayla (Year 12), Mia (Stars Alumni, Casuarina Senior College) and Amanda (Stars Program Coordinator), were lucky enough to be invited down to Melbourne by Stars Partners, Ampol, and the AFLW Carlton Football Club. Makayla and Mia got to experience the life of an AFLW player and rubbed shoulders with big names of the club such as Kirby Bentley (former AFLW Player) and Eddie Betts (former AFL Player) and getting VIP access to watch the mighty Carlton Blues play the Essendon Bombers for the AFLW Indigenous Round. Makayla was also lucky enough to meet this artist of this season's Indigenous playing jersey for the Carlton FC, Stewart James! What an amazing experience.
The annual Clontarf Awards night celebrated another successful year for our Academy, with families of our Year 12s travelling to see their son’s graduate Year 12. Families travelled great distances, coming from communities such as Timber Creek, Yarralin, Borroloola and Kalano. In the presence of HRS staff, friends, families, peers, and Clontarf partners, our Academy Members stood proud and tall as we celebrated their year.
The awards night also provided an opportunity to honour eight outstanding individuals who excelled in different areas throughout the year. Congratulations to the following Academy Members on their awards: Bronson (Year 9) for the Attendance Award, Hank (Year 11) for the Employment Award, Angas (Year 9) for Junior Leadership Award, Max (Year 12) for the Senior Leadership Award, Will (Year 7) for the Junior Academic Award, Rahiri (Year 12) for the Senior Academic Award, Ricco (Year 9) for the Junior Clontarf Spirit Award and Jaren (Year 12) for the Senior Clontarf Spirit Award.
We congratulated our four graduating Year 12s, Rahiri, Maxirrick, Relton and Robin, on their fantastic achievements. All four young men have grown considerably in their time at HRS, with Max and Rahiri spending the past 6 years of schooling here. Throughout their time at HRS they have been significant leaders within the school, holding positions such as boarding prefect or school football captain. The speeches that all the award winners and Year 12s made were powerful and poignant, with many laughs had and tears shed across the night.
Well done to Tylar (Year 10) on being our MC for the night. It’s an important task and shows great courage. As well, thanks to Hank (Year 11) for doing the Acknowledgement of Country and Cooper (Year 11) for looking after our presentation.
It's been a great year for our HRS Academy and the Awards night served as the perfect opportunity to reflect on this. Well done lads – you have made us all incredibly proud.
