Year 9 Melbourne Experience
Year 9 students Regan, Georgia, Milo, Ishaq, and Cooper share their insights into the recent trip from Darwin to Melbourne.
Recently a group of 24 Year 9s went from HRS to Melbourne. We all had a wonderful time exploring and seeing what the other Haileybury campuses are like. There were many highlights.
My favourite experience was the AFL match we got to see, we were lucky enough to watch the game between the Melbourne Demons and GWS. It was a tense match with GWS winning after being down 27 points after the first quarter. The atmosphere in the stadium and being so close to the pitch was incredible. We also got to go on a private tour of the MCG earlier that day, going onto the ground, through the members section, and seeing one of the changerooms. Some of us also got to sit in seats reserved for people who have been members for over 50 years. We then went through the sports museum attached to the MCG and saw the long history of AFL and cricket in Melbourne.
Another highlight was going to Phillip Island. Although it was a long trip there, it was definitely worth it to see the koalas and penguins. The penguins were so cool to see in person and watching them waddle up the beach in tightly packed groups was amazing. We all got some nice photos of the koalas, if we were able to find them and some of us bought souvenirs from the gift shop. We also greatly enjoyed the shopping opportunities, spending an hour and a half exploring the Queen Vic Markets, and over 3 hours going through shops at Melbourne Central.
My favourite experience was seeing the campuses and meeting the other Haileybury Year 9 students. Having the opportunity to see what everyday life is like for students on the other side of the country was incredible, and experiencing the giant Keysborough campus and the vertical city campus was such a rewarding time. Everyone there was really nice, and I personally felt very welcomed into their community.
On behalf of our group, we'd like to say a huge thank you to all the staff involved in ensuring we had the most enjoyable trip possible, especially Mr Eddie, Ms Thomas and Ms De Kosta Hill. We all appreciated how well you managed the date mix-up, even though we would have loved to have an extra day in Melbourne. Thank you!
-Regan, Georgia, Milo
The Melbourne trip has been a highlight of this year. Some of my favourite moments were the game between The Demons and Giants (The Giants won). My favourite day was on the last day of the trip. We walked around Melbourne Central and got to shop and socialise. Throughout the trip, the whole group was extremely independent, and the teachers put a lot of trust in us.
-Ishaq
Visiting Melbourne with my peers was truly an unforgettable experience. Some highlights included watching the Demons versus the Giants at the MCG (my dad was slightly envious about that one) and observing Little Penguins in their natural habitat. It was really interesting seeing how different, yet similar the Melbourne City and Keysborough campuses were in terms of the grounds, routines, and student likeness.
A big thank you to Mr. Eddy, Ms. Thomas, and Ms. de Koster-Hill for taking time out of their busy schedules and making the trip a safe and enjoyable one for all who attended. I would certainly recommend younger students pursue this rewarding opportunity in Year 9.
- Cooper

The Early Learning Centre recently hosted a heartwarming Father's Day celebration of families, bringing together students, their dads, and special guests for a morning filled with joy and camaraderie. The event was a beautiful tribute to the important role that fathers and families play in the lives of our young learners.
The celebration kicked off with the student’s performing songs for their guests with each melody filled with love and appreciation. The heartfelt performances brought smiles and, at times, tears to the eyes of the proud parents and guests who attended.
Following the musical performances, everyone gathered for a delicious catered breakfast. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to relax, enjoy a meal together, and connect with other members of the school community. The atmosphere was buzzing with conversation, laughter, and the warmth of shared stories.
Throughout the morning, families participated in a wide range of activities that catered to all interests. The activity stations included a photo booth where families could capture special moments, sports activities that got everyone moving, and construction and woodwork areas where creativity flowed. Children and parents alike enjoyed colouring, blowing bubbles, and even making edible bead jewellery, adding a touch of sweetness to the day.
The turnout was fantastic, with an overwhelming number of families coming together to celebrate. The morning was a perfect blend of fun, creativity, and quality time, making it a memorable event for all who attended.
Beyond the fun and festivities, this event highlighted the importance of community gatherings in strengthening our connections. Community events like these provide a platform for families to bond, share experiences, and build lasting relationships within the school community. They foster a sense of belonging and support, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and included.
As the event came to a close, it was clear that the Father's Day celebration had succeeded in bringing the community closer together. Parents left with not only wonderful memories but also a deeper connection to the school and each other. It was a beautiful morning that emphasised the significance of community, family, and the simple pleasures of spending time with loved ones. These events are more than just celebrations; they are the threads that weave our community together, making it stronger and more resilient.

The last few weeks have been fantastic down in the Junior School, and it’s hard to believe we’re already approaching the end of the term!
Our Father’s Day breakfast was a huge success, with many families joining us for a pancake or two on Friday morning. It was wonderful to see so many families there, and I know your children loved spending this time with you. We’re already looking forward to next year’s breakfast.
Over the weekend, we participated in the Tournament of Minds competition, and we’re thrilled to announce that both Junior School teams won their respective categories in Social Science and STEM. We are incredibly proud of their achievements, and they will now travel to the Tournament of Minds International Finals in November. Additionally, we have a Middle School team heading to the finals, so HRS will be well represented at the competition!
Our students continue to engage in our wonderful House events, highlighted by our recent Cross-Country morning. Nearly all students attended and participated, making it a fantastic start to the day. Next, our students will prepare for the upcoming House Singing Competition in Week 10. The house singing is always a crowd favourite so please come along and enjoy the singing.
Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome Happy Healthy Harold next week—a visit that is always a highlight for our students!
We are also excited that next week is the musical and we hope you have all booked your tickets to the show!

House Cross Country was a great spectacle of House spirit, competition, and resilience. In hot conditions, our students showed their commitment by donning their House shirts and sports shoes to run, jog, or walk around the School, earning points for participation.
It was wonderful to see so many students enjoying the experience, either cheering on friends or running past the crowd. We witnessed some fantastic individual performances with Timothy and Darcie winning the Year 7 races; Bronte and Jacob winning Year 8; and Michael and Macey winning Year 9. Across the Middle and Senior Schools, the winning House was Djarrak. Congratulations to all involved.
The weekend saw two Middle School teams enter the Tournament of the Minds competition, held at Dripstone Middle School on Saturday. Students performed a ‘long term’ challenge and a ‘spontaneous’ challenge, stretching their thinking, creativity and collaboration skills. Out of the four teams HRS entered, three teams won the competition, earning the opportunity to travel to Sydney for the International Finals. This is a fantastic achievement of which we are very proud. Congratulations to all students and staff involved!

At the beginning of Term 3, Year 10 students Sam and Madison started their exchange adventure in Melbourne. In this week’s newsletter Madison provides us with an insight into her experiences.
Melbourne Exchange
For the past five weeks, Sam and I have been living our best lives. From participating in different sports, subjects, House activities, and tourist attractions we have been trying to experience everything Melbourne has to offer.
This week we have reached the halfway mark which is very bittersweet, these past five weeks have flown, and we couldn’t be more grateful for this amazing opportunity.
The first few weeks at school were overwhelming as we were getting to know our peers and teachers, finding our way around the school and navigating the Melbourne lifestyle. However, now we are settled and having the best time. We have made great friends, connected with our teachers, and are exploring everything this city has to offer.
My favourite subject by far is Unit 1 and 2 Business Management. I have the best teacher (Mr Thomas Snaith) that you could ask for and a small and lively class – where I have made my closest friends. Something very different is being able to leave campus at recess and lunch as I am exchanging at the City campus, right in Melbourne’s CBD. Each recess and lunch, my friends and I either walk around Melbourne or we eat our food in the beautiful Flagstaff gardens.
Sam and I have both indulged in the school sport area of Haileybury. Each Tuesday we travel to Keysborough from our respective campuses and participate in different activities. For the first few weeks, I experienced the last section of the netball season and I’m now joining in different House activities. Sam enjoys the swimming program in Keysborough’s indoor pool and has taken up a new sport playing water polo.
A highlight so far was definitely Tuesday’s OHA (Old Haileyburian Association) Carnival Day and House Gala Day. OHA Carnival allowed us to enjoy games, movies, yoga, Pilates, carnival games, and free food. We got to make memories and new friendships and explore the very large ‘Keysie’ campus. House Gala involved a talent show, house debating, writing, literature, and more. We loved watching the talent show and seeing people’s personalities show and had many laughs.
Sam and I have both been to a few AFL games and been out to different Melbourne landmarks. We will definitely be sad to leave, but over the remainder of the term we are going to enjoy and soak up every minute.

It is an opportune time to reflect on the various activities offered to our students at Haileybury Rendall School and the benefits for our Boarding students. Activities like music tuition, choir, being involved with our School musical - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, (on-stage and back-stage), social well-being activities, and a plethora of sports training and competitions. These types of activities can help students discover new passions and develop valuable skills which can last a lifetime.
Participation in these activities also foster a sense of community and connection, which is particularly important for us at Haileybury Rendall School. We want our students to build strong friendships and connect with their peers, and our school culture. Involvement in external clubs and different activities also encourages the development of important life skills, such as leadership, teamwork, and time management – all very important aspects of personal growth but also vital for vocational success.

The new HRS Mountain Bike Club (MTB Club) got off to a great start in August, with five students attending the first ride at Charles Darwin National Park. The park has technical but fun trails involving rocks and steep uphill and downhill sections. One of our favourite trails was named UXO, a short but steep trail with some big rocks to navigate. Some plans for future rides include Lee Point and Howard Springs pine forest, with trails having beginner and advanced options. We encourage anyone who is interested to sign up– everyone is welcome. Speak with Mr Evans if you’re keen to be part of the MTB Club.
A huge thanks to Mr Evans for organising this club and to Mr Greenwood for joining us. We are all grateful to have this experience.

Year 9 Student
This semester Year 10 Art students have been working on their Photography Unit, Still Life. The students selected their final piece to be on show in the library
Still Life refers to objects that are placed in a group, often on a table or plinth, for the purpose of reproduction. It often transpires its genre to painting and drawing techniques. Students used the Art room to set up makeshift studios. They are now working on their Portfolio task and studying the technique of Chiaroscuro which refers to strong contrasts of black and white. This is an Italian term that literally means “light-dark”. In photography, it refers to clear tonal contrasts which are often used to suggest the volume and modeling on the portrait.
Year 12 Art students have nearly reached the finish line with their final artworks.
This Semester our students have been refining and resolving their initial ideas that were researched and documented at the commencement of this year. After much experimentation with art trials, and development of their ideas and presentation, they will complete their yearlong SAT (School Assessed Task) in two weeks.
After the process of critiquing and writing art statements, the final artworks are planned to be packed up and transported to the Keysborough Haileybury campus art gallery site in Melbourne, along with the online Haileybury Pangea students. The Art Exhibition will display and celebrate the Year 12 Art student's final artworks for Art Making and Exhibiting and Visual Communication Design subjects.

Golden Practice
This term, our Year 2 Gold students embarked on an exciting musical adventure, learning to play string instruments using pizzicato (plucking). Their enthusiasm has been contagious, especially when they play along with backing tracks. I’m so proud of how well they’ve mastered their timing and technique!
As they continue to practice, the students are excitedly preparing for their very first performance at the Junior School assembly next term. It’s been a joy to see their progress, and I can’t wait for everyone to see how far they’ve come. Keep shining, Year 2 Gold!

Last week, our HRS international students Pauline (Year 12), Betty (Year 12), Alex (Year 9), and Marc (Year 12) delivered an entertaining and insightful briefing speech to the group of students preparing for this year's China Study Tour. As seasoned travellers and experienced participants in international programs, these students shared valuable advice and personal anecdotes that captivated their peers and left a lasting impression.
Pauline opened the session by discussing the importance of cultural understanding and how embracing Chinese traditions can enrich the experience. Betty followed with practical tips on language learning, encouraging students to immerse themselves fully in the environment to maximize their language acquisition. Alex shared his own challenges and successes during his international student learning journey, emphasizing the importance of staying open-minded and adaptable. Finally, Mark spoke about the value of building relationships with local students, highlighting how these connections can lead to lifelong friendships and a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture. We can't wait to depart on Friday, 20 September for Beijing and Haileybury Tianjin!

This term we have had many visitors come through our Stars doors. From reptile friends to our friends from the Police force.
NT Police came for a visit to chat to our Year 9s about careers in Policing. The visit was insightful, and we were able to try on some of the Police uniforms. Year 9 Stars Jaylarnie, Tyanne, Natalina, Denita, and Laweena had so much fun trying on the uniforms that it ended up being a fashion parade.
Our Stars Volleyball Carnival is in Week 9 this term, so we have been training hard all term in preparation to play against the other Stars programs from around the Top End. From trainings at Dripstone Middle School, Nightcliff Middle School and beach volleyball every Friday morning at Casuarina Beach, the girls have been sharpening their skills. The highlights have been meeting new girls from other Stars programs and the unreal sunsets over Casuarina Coastal Reserve. Definitely worth the early starts.
In Week 6, during our Friday morning activity, the girls were introduced to tennis by the lovely Grace from Tennis Australia. The girls enjoyed some fun tennis games that Grace taught us and then some friendly competition at the end with the Zombies vs Humans game. Quatisha (Year 8) came out victorious and had bragging rights for the rest of the day. The girls have really taken on the Stars’ pillars of Commitment and Pride, everyone has been committing and having a go!

Our Clontarf Middle School students can now add winners of the ‘Battle in the Barkly’ to their victories for the year!
This competition is between all the Middle School Clontarf Academies in the Northern Territory. This was an impressive win to go with the recent Clontarf 'Rex Bara' Darwin competition!
Several of these players
also played important roles in the Darwin Middle School Competition last term,
alongside other Haileybury Rendall School students.
Congratulations to the fellas on their incredible achievement!
