As we have grown beyond 1000 students and with over 200 staff in 2024, I thought it would be timely to describe the roles carried out by our three exceptional Deputy Principals. It is rather special that each of these leaders have been here for several years and is committed to our future.
Felicity Pearson joined HRS at the start of 2021. Her role as Deputy Principal has developed and evolved over time with many portfolios that have drawn on the skillsets she developed from 20 years at Wesley College, Melbourne, and its offshoot, Yiramalay School in the Kimberley, WA.
Felicity takes oversight of many areas including Enrolments, Marketing, Indigenous Education, International relations, Risk & Compliance, Policies, and Special Events. At the moment she is in Indonesia working for Haileybury to further relationships and develop enrolment opportunities for our international boarding school.
Felicity has a passion for the Performing Arts and is again taking a lead role in directing the School Musical – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the new musical.
Dennis Nowak is our Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning. This whole-school role focuses on what I often describe as our “core business” learning. In this role Dennis oversees all elements of teaching, learning, curriculum, assessment and reporting. He is well-supported by all our learning leaders who include Heads of Department (HoDs) in the Middle School and Senior School and our Junior School Deputy Heads – Emma McDonald and Maddie McAllister.
Dennis joined HRS in 2021 as Director of Boarding but is enjoying his second year in the DP role. He is passionate about differentiation, challenge, and high expectations. With 2 children in the Junior School, I am hoping we have him hooked at HRS for years to come!
Wendy Pickering-Tyers joined HRS before I arrived and is now our Deputy Principal of Wellbeing. Her role as Head of the Senior School has prepared her perfectly for this senior leadership role. Wendy has a focus on all things to do with health, safety, and wellbeing across the entire school.
She works very closely with each of the four Heads of School – Michelle Shaw in the Early Learning Centre, Lisa Doyle (Junior School), Brendan Evans (Middle School) and Kylie Mobilia (Senior School). Wendy sets and encourages high standards in all she does for staff and students. She also works closely with boarding wellbeing matters, the Indigenous Wellbeing Hub staff and students, as well as guiding the school counsellors. Wendy also manages complex behavioural issues along with the Heads of School.
Let’s shout out to our three amazing Deputy Principals and celebrate all their great work and ongoing commitment to our wonderful school!

Welcome back to our OSHC family for Term 3. I hope you all had a wonderful break.
As we enter the second half of the year with reoccurring bookings in place, our attendance is steady for this term. Don’t miss out on your child’s chance to spend their morning or afternoon learning and playing with friends, get your bookings placed in advance to avoid missing out.
The recent Rocketeers holiday program, Mission XIV, saw Haileybury Rendall School host a Camp Australia basketball day on Thursday, July 4.
This event saw Moil Primary, Parap Primary, along with the three Good Shepherd Lutheran Schools all join Haileybury Rendall School for a fantastic dry season day where children participated in basketball skills and competitions.
Looking towards Term 3, our International Day of Friendship in Week 3 is on Tuesday, 30 July. Our Early Learning Centre (ELC) children had an exciting time throughout our holiday program.
Our little learners have engaged in a variety of enriching and fun activities designed to stimulate their creativity, teamwork, skills, and love for nature.
The children had a fantastic time getting their hands dirty in our gardening sessions. They planted flowers, herbs, and vegetables, learning about the importance of caring for plants and the environment.
Our movie day was a hit! The children enjoyed a cozy day with ice cream and their favourite animated films. It was a great way to relax and unwind together. Our Family Movie Night is not far away either and tickets are on sale now!
Bike day brought smiles and laughter as the children rode their bikes around the ELC grounds. They practiced their biking skills, learned about safety, and enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine.
Disco day was full of energy and fun! Our little dancers showed off their moves, enjoying a variety of music and some dazzling disco lights along with Karaoke sessions.
It was a fantastic way to get active and express themselves through dance.
Art and craft sessions allowed the children to unleash their creativity. Creating new dinosaur and fairy gardens was a magical experience. They participated in the preparation of designing and commencing our new enchanting gardens, complete with miniature dinosaurs and fairies. These projects allow them to explore different themes and express their creativity.
Our mini-camping adventure was a highlight! The children set up tents, sang campfire songs, and enjoyed toasted marshmallows over the campfire. It was a wonderful experience that brought them closer to nature and each other.
Building forts and using assorted blocks, and other materials sparked the children's imaginations on construction day. They worked together to construct impressive structures, developing their problem-solving and teamwork skills.
One of the most memorable experiences was our visit to the Territory Wildlife Park. The children had an amazing time viewing animals and exploring nature, with the bus ride proving to be exciting. They learned about various wildlife species and their habitats, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
We are so proud of our ELC children for their enthusiasm and participation in all these activities. It was a fantastic holiday program filled with learning, laughter, and memorable moments.

Term 3 begins
It was so great to welcome back the boarders to HRS from communities and all over Australia after the 3 week holidays.
The atmosphere has been so positive, helped by the arrival of four new boarders. Morgan, who joined us from Japan (but he is really from Elliot). Alex from China (but he has been a day student earlier in the year) and Freddie and Tom from London, UK. Freddie and Tom are students from Haileybury Turnford School and have joined us for three weeks on exchange. They have made a very positive impact and are making the most of their time at HRS and Boarding.
Some of the highlights in Boarding so far this term have been the weekend activities such as Sunset Casuarina Beach, the NATSIAA exhibition at the Darwin Museum, and Berry Springs (as seen by the photographs below) as well as Clontarf-Friday football. We are looking forward to the Darwin Show this weekend.
Term 3 has begun positively!

As part of National Careers Week, HRS launched the new Career Tools website.
The website is a dedicated careers resource where HRS students can explore fully interactive pages, encompassing everything they need to know about specific careers, job searches, and study options. The aim is to provide students with the latest information that will assist them to make decisions about their future career and life beyond school. Students can use the site to locate University, TAFE and a variety of other courses across Australia, source information about the VCE and search for job vacancies. The platform also includes links to a variety of other services and agencies that support students in terms of their post-school options.
Check out the website at Haileybury Rendall School (careertools.com.au)
Work Experience is a compulsory part of the Year 10 program. Students are encouraged to consider their interests and determine an industry or occupation that they would like to experience or know more about.
Students will be required to contact potential work host places/business to arrange their own work experience placement. Information and a work booklet with activities will be completed via PEX lessons in Term 2.

During Term 2, Andrew Fischer from the Life Choices Foundation came to Haileybury Rendall School to talk to Year 9 students about making 'smart' choices in a demanding and busy world. Some of our Year 9 students said this of their experience at the seminar;
"It was very inspirational because it taught me to keep going in life and never give up" Ropa.
"I found the Life Choices presentation inspirational and that if I keep on believing in myself and my peers we can get through anything" Zoe.
Elisha said she found Andrew had "resilience and a growth mindset" and did what he knew was the right thing when making tough decisions in life in general.
Overall, the Year 9 cohort found value and meaning in Andrew's powerful presentation, urging young people to stand true to their values.

What an amazing experience for all. All of us, except one person, did not know how to play soccer. In our fixtures, we played different schools and the girls' team played each school twice. It was amazing how we didn’t know how to play soccer, but we came together as a team in every game we played and had a plan, and how we were going to set up and play.
At the end of the day, we ended up coming in second place. Soccer Gala Day was truly an exciting experience for all.

In Term 2, Year 11 students attended Street Smart High at the Darwin Convention Centre with many other schools in Darwin. The day was jam-packed and consisted of numerous speakers whose lives had drastically changed as a result of careless driving or unfortunate road accidents. Each speaker shared personal and confronting recounts about their traumatic experiences associated with road safety disobedience and ignorance with some even losing a child of similar age to us.
Speakers such as Holly Scott, Blake Wilson, Eli Murn and Melissa McGuinness discussed personal experiences associated with road safety. Alongside the informative elements, the day included engaging activities such as wheelchair basketball, interactive displays, an intense yet important simulated crash scene, as well as opportunities to engage with emergency services personnel.
The day taught us many things about driving. Driving has risks to your safety, but it’s all about minimizing the number of risks you have. For example, we learned that turning your phone off while driving, putting your seatbelt on, and even slowing down when uncomfortable with the maximum speed limit are all instances where minuscule actions decrease your risk of danger significantly.
We also came to better understand 5-star safety ratings in cars and the value in purchasing a safe vehicle. Most importantly we learned that we need to be upstanders and call out our mates if they are considering driving when they have been drinking or if they are just generally driving recklessly and behaving poorly in a vehicle. You never believe it will be you in the accident, but after this day I learned that it can be me, it can be anyone.

Ending Term 2 on a high with the Middle School Hockey Gala Day! The Year 7/8 team had a balanced and strong team, demonstrating teamwork, determination, and endless fight. They came away coming joint first in their pool, a fantastic performance. The Year 8/9 team showed good improvement and teamwork throughout the day. A shout-out to Tim and Sam who are Year 7 students playing up a year level. Overall, they came 2nd place, great work!
All students represented Haileybury Rendall School respectfully, congratulating opposing teams and showing true HRS spirit. Well done to all students!

The School Gala Day for soccer was a vibrant event filled with excitement and enthusiasm.
Students from Senior School participated, showcasing their soccer skills in friendly matches. The event featured both boys’ and girls’ teams, encouraging sportsmanship and teamwork, with teachers cheering from the sidelines, adding to the lively atmosphere. Trophies were awarded to the winning teams.
The Gala Day successfully fostered a sense of community and highlighted the importance of physical activity and sports in education.

Sony Camp
Haileybury Rendall School once again had the pleasure of hosting the Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp.
Senior School students and HRS staff volunteered their time to care for and entertain children.
This program is so rewarding for our senior students who take on the role of the main carer for a child. It is a privilege for our students to be given this special honour and trust to care for a child by families.
Camp provides a very much-needed and rare opportunity for these families to have some respite, while their child is having a wonderful time with us.
This year the camp theme was ‘Space’. Saturday morning the campers and their families arrived. It was a water-fun day with lots of bubbles and water slide adventures. We all enjoyed a pizza lunch that was kindly donated by Territory Health and Support. Later in the day, we got creative with our Fun with Science Activities, and what a wonderful time we all had making shaving cream art and slime, which is still a very popular and loved activity.
On Sunday, Fairy Jill came to visit bringing with her lots of magic and fun. Everyone big and little lined up to have their face magically decorated with glitter. It was such a wonderful time. The garden was filled with so much fun, laughter, and magical colour from the children dancing around with ribbons as well as lots more bubbles.
After dinner, we all cuddled into our beanbags and blankets and enjoyed watching "Home" for movie night. Everyone was treated to popcorn and snacks.
Monday came around so quickly. This was the last day of the camp and the day that we held our Family Farewell Lunch. The families reunited with their children and heard about all the fun they had and about the special memories they created. At the lunch, the families had an opportunity to watch the video that was made of the weekend and share the enjoyment that their child experienced over the weekend.

Western Heights College Geelong – AFL Academy Visit
On Wednesday, July 17, Haileybury Rendall School had the pleasure of hosting AFL academy students from Western Heights College Geelong. They conducted AFL clinics with several of our classes, where students engaged in various activities to enhance their game skills and understanding, including taking some very impressive speckies! The sessions were led by Western Heights College students under the guidance of their teaching staff and former Western Bulldogs AFL coach, Brendan McCarthy. After school, our boarding students had the opportunity to join them for training. Witnessing the students come together to play footy and enjoy a sausage sizzle afterward made for a truly memorable day!
Suns Middle School AFL Competition
This year, Haileybury entered its inaugural teams into the Suns Middle School Football competition, which took place after school throughout Term 2. The HRS girls' team remained undefeated throughout the season but unfortunately fell short to O'Loughlin Catholic College in the season's deciding match. Taitum (Year 8) was awarded Best and Fairest for her outstanding skills with the footy and Karen (Year 7) was awarded runner-up for her exceptional performances. Zoe (Year 9) earned the Most Improved award for her consistent progress and Ava (Year 9) was recognised with the Coaches' Award for her outstanding contribution to the team's success
The HRS boys' team achieved a thrilling victory to take out the season, overcoming Nightcliff Middle School by a narrow 3-point margin in a come-from-behind win. Captain Ricco was recognised as best on ground for his game-winning performance whilst Jonah (Year 9) secured the win with a pivotal goal in the final minutes. Ricco was named Best and Fairest Player of the season, with Eric (Year 8) receiving the runner-up accolade. Antonio (YEAR) was celebrated as the Most Improved player, showing remarkable progress throughout the season, and Lachie (Year 7) received the Coaches' Award for his outstanding support and leadership among teammates.
Congratulations to all Middle School students who participated in the Suns Middle School Football Competition. Their commitment, sportsmanship, and skills were truly commendable.

REGIONAL SHOWS!
Over the last two weeks, HRS attended Alice Springs and Katherine Show to showcase Haileybury Rendall School, including Boarding. This weekend, follow the magenta glow to the Royal Darwin Show, and come see us there! The team are looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting new community members.
Highlights include a Year 12 workplace visit to McDonald’s Casuarina, an all-Stars breakfast at Nightcliff Foreshore, and the Year 10 and 11 fishing trip to Dundee Beach.
Year 12 students have learned about employment opportunities at McDonald’s and experienced cooking their own burgers and making soft-serve ice cream, yum!
The Nightcliff Foreshore put on some perfect weather for a BBQ breakfast; we had so much fun mingling with all the other Stars Programs from different schools in the Darwin and Palmerston areas. After some interesting bets about who would catch the biggest fish at Dundee, unfortunately for the girls, we were all fish feeding without a catch! Fortunately for the fish, they all got to live another day.
We are looking forward to more adventures in Term 3.

Program Coordinator
Our Middle School boys finished Term 2 with a nail-biting win against Nightcliff Middle School in the Darwin Middle School Football Competition. The boys’ participation in the competition was a highlight of the term and year. In Term 3 it is our Seniors who have the opportunity to take on other schools across Darwin. Can our Seniors emulate the Middle School lads and bring home the Cup? Only time will tell.
This Term we welcome Patrick Bowden into the Academy as our new Academy Director. Paddy has previously worked at the Clontarf Foundation and will be a great addition to the team. Our previous Academy Director, Duane Von Senden, will take his knowledge across to Casuarina Senior College. We thank him for all he has done for the Academy.
Term 3 looks to be a busy one at HRS. We have Senior School Football on Mondays and Middle School Clontarf Football on Wednesdays. Tuesday morning is a fitness session before School, and we bookend each week with the famous Friday Footy before school. In Week 1 we welcomed HRS students and teachers, as well as the Casuarina Secondary College students and had over 50 on the training track. An awesome effort by all involved.
The Year 10s will be doing work experience in Week 3. We have students working in hospitality, retail, construction, and student support for the week. Good luck to these guys as they get their first taste of the working world.
Amongst all this we have three massive camps set for the term, travelling as far south as Tennant Creek and as far north as the Tiwi Islands. We look forward to celebrating NAIDOC week in Week 4 and fitting in heaps of other health and education sessions with our boys as we work towards the ultimate goal – graduating Year 12.
Let’s make this a great term!
