Early Learning Centre news
ELC joins the Clean Up Australia Day effort!
Once again, our Early Learning Centre (ELC) students embraced the spirit of sustainability by participating in Clean Up Australia Day. Equipped with gloves, rubbish bags, and hats, our young environmentalists ventured out to make a difference in and around the school grounds. With great enthusiasm and keen eyes, they collected a multitude of rubbish items, ensuring our learning environment remains clean and green.
The children were eager and excited to take on this important task, demonstrating their dedication to caring for the planet. Their enthusiasm was contagious, sparking conversations about the impact of waste and the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. By taking action, they cleaned up their surroundings and helped raise awareness among their peers and the broader school community about the importance of sustainability.
As the ELC students worked diligently, some of the older students took notice of their efforts, hopefully prompting meaningful discussions throughout the school and the opportunity to reflect on their own environmental responsibilities. Through activities such as these, we hope to foster a school-wide dialogue on the importance of keeping our shared spaces clean and how everyone, regardless of age, can contribute to a healthier planet.
This initiative helped the students remove litter and deepened their understanding of the importance of caring for our planet. Clean Up Australia Day provided a valuable opportunity to discuss sustainability, our relationship with the Earth, and our role in protecting the environment. The students learned that even small efforts, such as picking up rubbish, can have a big impact on the health of our surroundings and the creatures that share our world.
Engaging in hands-on experiences like these nurtures a sense of responsibility and environmental awareness from a young age. By actively participating in caring for their surroundings, our ELC students are developing lifelong habits that contribute to a healthier, cleaner planet. Their efforts were a tremendous achievement, and they should feel proud of the positive impact they have made.
A big thank you to all our little eco-warriors and the educators who guided them through this meaningful experience. Together, we are making a difference—one piece of rubbish at a time!
It is hard to believe that Term 1 is already over. Thank you, families, for your ongoing support and feedback, which assist us in creating the best learning environment for our students. We have seen incredible growth throughout the school this term, from our Transition students, who are becoming more independent and confident each day, to our Year 6 students, who are taking on the role of the collective leadership team with maturity and enthusiasm.
Together, we have achieved a lot within the Junior School. Students have embraced opportunities and involved themselves in daily activities, including before and after school. Seeing students getting involved in different clubs and exploring interests in other areas has been wonderful.
I hope that you take some time over the holidays to relax, reconnect with yourselves and each other, and do some activities that you enjoy. Term 2 will be busy with the start of the Year 5 and 6 camp, so it may be a chance to get the students prepared for this by having a look at the packing list and perhaps setting up a tent in the backyard.
I look forward to seeing everyone for an exciting Term 2.

Let's talk Politics
This term, Year 6 students had the opportunity to visit Parliament House as part of their studies on democracy and the workings of government. During the visit, students explored the history of the building and observed the chamber (although not in action), gaining a deeper understanding of where key decisions are made. They also learned about the preferential voting system and its role in our democratic process. Throughout the day, students engaged thoughtfully, asking insightful questions and drawing inspiration from past leaders—perhaps even sparking the ambitions of future politicians among them!

House Singing
The Middle and Senior Schools House Singing Competition took place on Wednesday afternoon, and it was an out-and-out success. Consistent with years gone by, we witnessed an exceptional level of student engagement, performance, and House spirit.
When I speak with new families about life at Haileybury Rendall School, I love seeing their surprise and delight when they hear about all year levels coming together in House groups to sing in front of the entire school. The House Singing Competition is the epitome of House spirit and culture.
This year’s theme was 2000s-10s, with each House performing a massed item and, for the first time, a solo or small group performance as a second song.
Baru performed a 1000 Miles/Soulja Boy mash-up
Pumarali with Unwritten and The Cup Song
Nganabaru with a Since You’ve Been Gone/Marry You mash-up and Umbrella
And congratulations goes to Djarrak, who highlighted the sensational talents of Saanvi (Year 9), who sang a solo If I Ain’t Got You. Djarrak delivered a stand-out performance as a team with DJ Got Us Falling in Love and claimed the trophy!
All Houses delivered excellent performances, with maximum participation.
Top End Youth Conference
The Top End Youth Conference happened on Friday of this week. We sent fourteen Year 8 students to this engaging event, which involved approximately 1000 students from across the Top End.
Students heard from inspirational guest speakers, visited careers stalls, witnessed live musical performances, and connected with other young people from across the region. Feedback from the students is that this was a very worthwhile experience.
A range of engaging opportunities will continue to be promoted throughout the year. Students are encouraged to regularly check myNotices for updates on how to get involved and take up the many opportunities on offer.
The Year 8 Mechatronics class is buzzing with excitement as students dive into the Mecha Soccer Championship Tournament! This innovative project has captured their enthusiasm, particularly because they played a key role in designing the assessment process. By involving them in the planning stages, they’ve developed a strong sense of ownership and pride in their work.
This hands-on project not only reinforces mechatronics concepts but also fosters teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The students’ engagement and dedication highlight the success of empowering them in the learning process. Stay tuned for more updates!

Reflecting on Term 1
As we reach the end of a busy and eventful term, we reflect on the incredible initiatives and achievements of our students. From community engagement to outstanding personal accomplishments, it has been a term to celebrate.
Throughout the term, students participated in various activities, including the International Women’s Breakfast, the Bombing of Darwin Ceremony, the Year 12 leadership group’s introduction of Circle Time for Year 7 students, Early Bird Reading, and the ever-popular House Singing Competition.
A special congratulations to Macey (Year 10), who has made history as the youngest-ever winner of the NT Sportsperson of the Year award. Macey is also the first Northern Territorian to be selected for Swimming Australia’s Flippers Squad—an incredible achievement! Also, congratulations to Abigail (Year 12), who was one of five selected NT representatives that attended the 30th National Schools Constitutional Convention (NSCC) in Canberra.
Our Prefects took part in a public speaking course based on the Toastmasters model. Their final presentation in front of parents, staff, and students was inspiring and entertaining. Congratulations to all participants for their impressive progress in speech delivery and presence.
The Sustainability Committee, led by Charlotte (Year 12 Sustainability and Reconciliation Prefect), has made a real impact. They have:
Donated over 1,000 books, stationery, and resources to schools and orphanages in Cambodia and Timor-Leste.
Have begun designing a new Sustainability/Reconciliation Garden.
Organised Junior School crafting sessions to build frog, bug, and bee hotels to promote biodiversity.
Planned a food scraps system with a worm farm, set to launch next term.
Scheduled our inaugural Sustainability Week (Term 3, Week 3) with fun activities and guest speakers.
Introduced a legacy tree initiative, allowing each graduating Year 12 class to plant a native tree.
The enthusiasm and involvement of our students are truly inspiring. Wishing everyone a restful and safe holiday!
VET has gotten off to a flying start this term! Our students have been actively engaging in offsite VET programs, gaining hands-on experience in Hairdressing, Construction, Aquaculture, Police Fire & Emergency Services, and Indigenous Allied Health. Meanwhile, onsite VET courses have commenced in Workplace Skills, Tourism, and Sport & Recreation, providing students with valuable industry knowledge and practical skills. We look forward to seeing their progress throughout the year!
Year 10 Launch Humanities Excursion: Fishing at Elizabeth River
As part of their unit, "Hooked on the Territory: Exploring Fishing and Culture," Year 10 Humanities students embarked upon an exciting excursion to the Elizabeth River Jetty. The outing aimed to teach students essential skills for planning a fishing trip, including analyzing weather forecasts, understanding tides and water quality, and identifying different fish species. Students tested their hands-on skills by fishing with handlines and squid bait, which they've practiced in class.
This experience offered a unique opportunity for students to connect with local culture while learning practical knowledge about fishing.

Geography fieldwork
As part of Unit 1 Geography, students conducted a fieldwork excursion to investigate the characteristics of bushfires and the interconnections between human and physical factors influencing bushfire risk. The study focused on identifying key environmental conditions, such as climate, vegetation, and topography, that contribute to bushfire behaviour and human factors like land use, mitigation strategies, and emergency management.
Students collected primary data through field observations, interviews, and photographic evidence, analysing how human activities, such as urban development and land clearing, impact bushfire frequency and intensity. The excursion also incorporated geospatial technologies, including GIS mapping, to visualise fire-prone areas, historical fire patterns and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard reduction strategies.
Following the fieldwork, students use their findings to produce a detailed report assessing the relationship between human and physical factors in bushfire events. This report demonstrates their understanding of key geographical concepts such as interconnection, scale, change, and sustainability. Students develop a deeper appreciation of bushfire management challenges and the importance of informed decision-making in reducing bushfire risk by integrating field data with geospatial technology and secondary data.

Boarding news
Boarding continues to thrive
Term 1 is finishing with the long-awaited rain bucketing down around us, thunder and lightning booming and brightening the skies, showing us the power of nature’s voice. Likewise, students sharing their voices and ideas about what they would like to happen at Boarding is very important.
As a result, there will be some changes in Term 2! We will be implementing a fishing activity, karate lessons, and a small library, which will be located in one of the Houses.
Our House meetings, normally held on a Wednesday, will now expand to a second meeting on Sundays, in order to deliver school ready notices and capture more student voice.
This Term has seen our after-school activities from 3.00 -4.00 pm include Mainstream Homework Club, Homework Support at Boarding, games, puzzles, guest speakers, and experiences from the Chinese Community. Thanks to Mr Shangguan and Ms de Koster-Hill for all of the food preparation and fun.
The staff that live onsite have contributed significantly to support additional activities in swimming, bead-craft, manicures, gym time, additional tuition for Boarders, driving duties, gaming, as well just being there for a game of Monopoly or a simple conversation.
I am grateful to my staff in all roles from Administration, Activities, Heads of Houses, and Residential Supervisors in supporting our culture of kindness, and we will always learn from mistakes and celebrate the successes in our community.
I wish all Boarders, staff and families a happy Term 1 Holidays!
Last Friday, Madjirra buzzed with focus and harmony as students participated in the Taiji Baduanjin Competition. The event challenged them to memorise and perform the eight distinct movements of this traditional Chinese exercise, promoting mindfulness, balance, and physical wellness. Participants showcased impressive discipline, smoothly flowing through each posture with grace and precision.
Adding to the excitement, HRS Boarding Supervisor Mr. Vana Vono joined in, demonstrating expert Taiji moves that inspired both students and staff. His involvement highlighted the communal spirit of the event, bridging cultural appreciation with healthy activity.
Taiji Baduanjin, known for its gentle yet powerful benefits, was a perfect way to foster well-being within our boarding community. Congratulations to all participants for their dedication—and a special thank you to Mr. Vono for leading by example! Stay tuned for more activities!

Inaugural House AFL 9's Competition
Term 1 has been an exciting start to our 2025 Middle & Senior House Competition! This term, we've hosted the inaugural Haileybury Rendall School AFL 9's competition, which has seen an impressive number of students stepping onto the field each week, all vying for their House in the premiership cup. The competition has been a showcase of exceptional skills, fierce rivalries, and outstanding sportsmanship.
The Senior School Grand Final was a thrilling top-of-the-table clash between the big red Pumarali storm cloud and the Baru crocodiles. Pumarali took home the victory in a tightly contested game, claiming the senior school flag.
Due to weather conditions, the Middle School Grand Final was postponed until Week 10. In this highly anticipated match, the relentless Pumarali storm cloud faced off against the mighty Nganabaru buffalos in an epic showdown. Despite their best efforts, Nganabaru came out champions over Pumarali for the title!

Boarding - Issue 03

Shoot for the stars
On Wednesday in Week 9, Haileybury Rendall School Stars participated in the Stars Basketball Carnival. There was so much enthusiasm that we were able to submit both a Middle School and Senior School team!
Both teams competed in 3-5 games each and assisted in refereeing other programs' games in their free time. The girls all had a great and enjoyable day playing the sport they love. A highlight of the day was interacting and hanging out with other students from different Stars Programs.
Well done, ladies, on a fantastic day!

A fantastic start to the year
What an incredible start to 2025 for the Clontarf Academy! Our 47 Academy members have been busy with a wide range of programs designed to support their growth and development.
We kicked off the year with an Induction Camp for our new members, fostering the Clontarf spirit and introducing them to the Academy’s values. For our Year 12 students, we hosted a Leadership Camp to Batchelor to help them develop the skills necessary for their roles as leaders at the school and in the Clontarf Academy.
In addition, we took students from grades 8-11 on an Engagement Camp to Jabiru, providing a meaningful cultural experience, including the amazing Yellow Water Cruise.
Our students have also participated in eight Tuesday Morning Sessions, which focus on personal development, and Friday Footy sessions, which promote fitness and teamwork among staff and students.
Our sporting events included a Senior and Middle Years Basketball carnival and a Senior Football carnival, where students demonstrated their skills and enjoyed friendly competition.
We also organised an Employment Forum for Year 11 students, giving them insight into career pathways and opportunities.
To further support our students, we held an afternoon Basketball competition, offering more chances for physical activity, and Wellbeing sessions after school, emphasising mental and emotional health.
It’s been a fantastic term filled with growth, connection, and achievement, setting a strong foundation for the rest of the year. We’re excited to see our members continue to thrive!
Thank you to all staff who have assisted us with the term. We’re looking forward to Term 2.
