Online news from Haileybury Rendall School
I hope everyone is refreshed and recharged for 2024. I have heard many stories about holidays in different parts of Australia and around the world.
We were thrilled to hear about the amazing VCE results of the Year 12 class of 2023 with a median ATAR of 85.6 being a clear school record and over 60% of students achieving an ATAR of 80 or above. It is even better to hear the stories of life after HRS involving university courses, gap years, entering the workforce, travel, further studies and returning to community or moving interstate.
I hope all parents have had a chance to download the myHRS app on their smartphones and/or visit the new parent intranet here.
We appreciate students and families being patient as we launch our new platforms – there have been a few teething issues, but we are getting there!
So, to those new and ‘old’, welcome to 2024, and let's make this year one to remember!

It is that time of year again where our school community starts to prepare for the World’s Greatest Shave. On Friday 22nd March Haileybury Rendall School will be holding its annual fundraising event where our students and staff will once again shave or colour their hair.
The funds that our school raises for the Leukaemia Foundation is used to support people that are diagnosed with a blood cancer. These funds go towards supporting the patients and their families as well as research. This money is also used to support thousands of Australians every year by providing services including information, emotional support and advocacy, educational programs, and access to a 'home away from home' accommodation for regional families that are required to relocate to the city for treatment.
This year we are aiming to increase our donation so please help and support our fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation so they can continue with the amazing support that they offer the community.
If you are interested in shaving or colouring your hair and fundraising for the World’s Greatest Shave, please register here.
Once you have joined our team or you need help signing up, please email me.
Thank you, your support is greatly appreciated.

Over the past four weeks, our Early Learning Centre (ELC) has been buzzing with the laughter and joy of our returning children and newest additions – the bright and bubbly 3-5 year old superstars of 2024!
As part of our warm ELC family, these little explorers have been embraced by our dedicated team and fellow students, making their transition into our community a seamless and exciting adventure.
The journey began with a series of delightful 'getting to know you' activities that sparked smiles and fostered new friendships. Our students have seamlessly settled into the daily rhythm of our ELC, bringing with them an energy that is never ending.
We have just finished an awesome holiday program that left our students with unforgettable memories. The program was an absolute hit, featuring an assortment of activities tailored just for them. From energetic dance-offs at the disco and cozy camping experiences to thrilling treasure hunts and brain-teasing board games, every day was a new adventure!
Water play and movie days added a refreshing touch, providing the perfect balance between excitement and relaxation. And, of course, our budding Picassos have been hard at work creating masterpieces during our art and craft sessions.
As we continue to nurture the curiosity and imagination of these little minds, we look forward to many more months of laughter, learning, and love. A big shoutout to our returning families for helping create a warm and inclusive environment for our new little stars.
Here's to a fantastic year ahead filled with growth, friendship, and endless possibilities!

A warm welcome back to all our returning families and a heartfelt welcome to our new families joining us this year! We hope your summer break was rejuvenating and filled with wonderful memories. As we embark on a new term, the energy and enthusiasm radiating from our students are truly contagious.
The start of the term has been nothing short of fantastic. It’s been a joy to witness the students reconnecting with friends, settling into routines, and embracing the excitement of a new academic year. Our dedicated teachers have worked diligently to prepare engaging and inspiring classrooms, setting the stage for a year of growth and learning.
If you haven’t already, please stop by the Junior School reception to collect your child’s book box.
In the coming weeks, we will be sharing information about our recess and lunchtime clubs. We highly encourage all students to explore these opportunities and get involved. It’s a fantastic way to make new friends, discover new interests, and add an extra layer of enjoyment to the school experience.
We wish all our students a year filled with exciting challenges, meaningful discoveries, and, most importantly, a love for learning. Our dedicated team is here to support each student’s unique learning journey, and we look forward to celebrating their achievements throughout the year.
As always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher or myself.

It is with great pleasure I welcome back our Middle School students and families. In particular, it is wonderful to welcome our new and Year 7 students to the School. I extend a thank you to all the classroom buddies who have supported our new students.
Students have been working with tutors and teachers to learn the processes of the Middle School, including locker use, managing homework, orientation and being ready to learn.
Our Year Level Coordinators play an important role in our students’ school lives. They are pivotal in supporting students with their learning growth and wellbeing, communicating with families, and providing support to teaching staff. In 2024, the team consists of Ms Sophie Carter - Year 7 Coordinator, Ms Rebecca Thomas - Year 8 Coordinator and Mr Nick Eddy -Year 9 Coordinator & Deputy Head of Middle School. Families are encouraged to build connections with these staff members so they can best understand their student’s needs.
Thank you to those who attended the recent Middle School Information Evening. The evening outlined important information regarding the learning, wellbeing and logistics of Middle School at HRS. I trust that those who attended got plenty out of it. The slides and a recording from the night are now available on myHRS for future reference.
Led passionately by students, the HRS Eco-Committee has been working hard to push a sustainability agenda within the School. The Eco-Committee put together an action plan, addressing matter of waste, energy and biodiversity; this included researching and recommending native plant species around the School.
The most recent project for the Eco-Committee is the implementation of a paper recycling project. Soon, all classrooms and offices will have an efficient paper recycling system to ensure our waste streams are managed more sustainably.

Welcome back to everyone for 2024. We have several new staff (including myself), students and families joining the Senior School this year, so an additional welcome to those of you new to Haileybury in 2024.
It is exciting and can be challenging starting at a new school or workplace, however the welcome by the Haileybury Rendall community has been extremely supportive and embracing. I am looking forward to meeting all the students in the Senior School as we continue to strive for distinction in all we do, continuing to develop and nurture our community at Haileybury.
This week I have had the pleasure of taking our Year 12 Prefects to Melbourne to visit our Haileybury counterparts. We travelled down on Sunday, arriving in the city in time for dinner at our hotel. The following morning, we walked through Flagstaff Gardens to visit the City campus. Some students had the chance to attend a class, while others had a tour of the facilities, including the rooftop social space, the indoor PE centre (including a running track), and the Arts and Drama centre. The rest of the day consisted of students meeting their host student at their respective campus (City, Berwick and Keysborough).
Tuesday saw all Senior students arrive at the Keysborough campus for classes in the morning and then a very formal Assembly, celebrating the Founders of Haileybury. We had the honour of sitting on the stage and hearing about the history of the school and the vision of its Principals throughout the years. It was then time for a meeting with CEO/Principal, Derek Scott, to discuss the various opportunities for connections between HRS and Haileybury Melbourne. Tuesday afternoon is school sport, and it was quite a novelty for HRS students to choose a summer sport to attend. Most popular were squash and lawn bowls!
Our final day was on Wednesday, with students experiencing a normal school day, attending classes and studying with other Year 12 students. By Wednesday night, there were 16 tired but very happy Year 12s heading home to Darwin. New friendships and connections had been established that will provide extra support through the year ahead. We learned about the differences and similarities between the two schools and hope to explore more opportunities to strengthen our relationships in the future.
A reminder to all students and parents that our Information Evening is on Monday 15, February. This will be a valuable and essential source of key information about the rules and academic processes that are involved in Senior School, particularly in relation to the VCE. I urge all students and parents to attend.

Hello everyone and welcome to back to HRS 2024,
We had a wonderful welcome to boarding event on Tuesday, 30 January and we are looking forward to a fantastic 2024 for HRS boarding.
I suppose I had better introduce myself. My name is Harry Hildebrand, and I am the new Director of Boarding. This first week has been very special, firstly getting to know (in order) the executive team, the other new staff, then all of the staff and my wonderful boarding staff and then this week the boarding students and all of the other students at HRS.
Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming.
FYI a little about me. I was born in Victoria, in Wangaratta named by the Bpangerang people, meaning ‘the cormorant’s resting place’. I worked as a teacher at Wesley College in Melbourne before travelling all over the world and stopping for 26 years to live and work in Peru, in South America. At Markham College in Lima, I developed a holistic teaching programme (called HELIX) which allowed me to work with many, young people in Peru including those from indigenous communities in the Andes mountains and the Amazon jungle. My wife, Vanessa is Peruvian and my son Luka claims to be ‘half llama/half kangaroo’. We are very excited about living in Darwin and working together to help make Haileybury Rendall School a great world educational institution.
I look forward to meeting all of the HRS Community.
On Tuesday, 30 January a wonderful event was held as a welcome to 2024 for all boarders, parents and families of new boarders and some staff. There was an official welcome, by HRS Principal, Andrew McGregor and myself in Dumabudla.
This was followed by a 'smoking ceremony' led by Trent Lee and a 'bush tucker' meal prepared by Shannon Motlop, Brad Hassell and the boarding staff. It was a great way to start the year and we look forward to a fantastic 2024 in boarding at HRS.
