It is always exciting to have Old Haileyburians visit us at HRS and despite having only graduated in 2023, one special visitor dropped in recently with some amazing news of what's in store for her in 2024.
Sahasra Linga, our dux Proximus from 2023, visited me recently to share the news of her acceptance into Monash University's Bachelor of Medical Science program for 2024. An impressive achievement and a fitting reward for her hard work and dedication throughout her academic journey at HRS.
It is exciting that our HRS graduates are able to fulfil their dreams and some of Sahasra’s peers have recently entered university courses around Australia in medicine, engineering, commerce and law – to name a few.
Sahasra's determination and commitment to excellence has undoubtedly paid off and she now has aspirations to eventually return to work in remote NT communities as a doctor. She has always found time to volunteer and it is not surprising that in the future she wants to have a positive impact on society, especially in areas where medical resources and expertise may be scarce.
With a strong academic foundation, diligent preparation, and clear vision for her future, there's no doubt that Sahasra is well on her way to a successful career in medicine. She was delighted with the four years education she received at HRS and was glowing in her praise of her teachers and the positive learning culture they have helped embed. It's also wonderful to hear that she'll be surrounded in 2024 by some of her peers from Haileybury who share her drive and ambition at Monash University, further fostering a supportive environment and extension of our community.
We couldn't be prouder of her achievements and the positive impact she's bound to make in the medical field and beyond.
Well done, Sahasra!

It is that time of year again, where our school community starts to prepare for the World’s Greatest Shave. Haileybury Rendall School will be holding its annual fundraising event where our students and staff will once again shave or colour their hair on Friday, 22 March.
The funds our school raises for the Leukaemia Foundation go towards supporting patients and their families, as well as blood cancer research. This money helps support thousands of Australians every year by providing services, information, emotional support and advocacy, educational programs, and access to a 'home away from home' accommodation for regional families that are required to relocate to the city for treatment.
This year we are aiming to increase our donation so please help and support our fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation, so they can continue with the amazing support they offer the community.
If you are interested in shaving or colouring your hair and fundraising for the World’s Greatest Shave, please register here.
Once you have joined our team or you need help signing up, please email me.
Thank you, your support is greatly appreciated.

Our first few weeks back at school to begin Term 1, 2024 have been busy! With fantastic numbers turning out for each and every single one of our sessions, both at Before and After School Care.
In this time, as an Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) group, we have celebrated Chinese New Year, with our display wall on showcase in our main OSHC room, with just a snippet of items highlighting our work done throughout that week.
We have also set up a cultural area within our main OSHC room, and this has been reflected through a crocodile (a Larrakia people Totem) representation, produced by Erin Chaplin, Margot Vellar, Poppy Hewitt, Annika Edlund, Tara Bradley, and Alva Chai.
In bringing our community within our OSHC group closer together, we have on display our CA (Camp Australia) Hands, which is a selection of children whom have come together to create a tree, showcasing our togetherness.
On Thursday, 7 March, we have our ‘Youth and Schools, Clean up Australia Day’ taking place at After School Care. As a group, we will be all putting on our gloves, and filling garbage bags with rubbish around our school grounds here at Haileybury Rendall School and doing our part for this day. So please, join in for this session, and let’s do this together.

Our community of 3 to 5-year-old children recently took part in a Smoking Ceremony, a traditional Indigenous practice guided by local Traditional Owners of Larrakia country. This ceremonial event not only marked the beginning of the school year, but also provided a profound opportunity for our young learners to connect with, and appreciate the rich culture of Indigenous traditions.
The Smoking Ceremony involved the burning of native plants to produce smoke, signifying a cleansing and purification process. The children, with their curiosity and openness, engaged eagerly with the swirling smoke and listened attentively as the Traditional Owners explained the cultural significance of the ceremony. This hands-on experience allowed our little ones to not only witness a unique cultural tradition, but also gain a deeper understanding of the importance of respecting nature and embracing the rituals that hold significance in various communities.
The children's participation in the Smoking Ceremony was enjoyed with enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in learning about different cultures. Their ability to connect with the ceremony showcased the importance of early exposure to diverse traditions and the positive impact it can have on fostering cultural awareness.

The Junior School clubs and activities have seen many of our students taking on the challenge of learning new skills alongside their peers, and getting involved in all the school has to offer, which is wonderful to see.
Thank you to all our families for assisting us with the expectations we have put in place to develop our student’s independence. Most of our Transition to Year 3 students independently enter the school grounds, carry their school bag and prepare for the day ahead. Our Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students have been the ideal role models for these younger students and continue to lead the way.
In Week 3, we had the honour of hosting our Leadership Investiture Assembly where we welcomed our new student leaders for 2024.
I am very excited to work with this group of students in the coming year. Their passion, enthusiasm, and innovative ideas are already shaping up to make a positive difference in our school community.
Fridays have become vibrant with our House activities, providing students with opportunities to come together, build connections, and foster a sense of belonging. The camaraderie and spirit displayed during these activities have been outstanding.
We are immensely proud of the engaged and positive atmosphere that defines our Junior School community. Thank you for your continued support in making our school a place of growth, learning, and community spirit.

Haileybury Rendall School’s House competition is a significant component of our identity. Students, staff and even families exercise their competitive spirit to see their House raise the cup at Speech Night each year.
We have another packed calendar for 2024, expertly led by our new team of Heads of House:
The first event for the 2024 academic year was completed at the end of last year, with Djarrak taking out House Swimming.
House Singing has now moved to Term 1 and all four Houses have begun rehearsals in preparation for the main event on Wednesday, 27 March. The theme this year is ‘Disney’, and each House will be performing songs from:
We wish all the best to each of our Houses and look forward to seeing the quality of competition ramp up in 2024.

The Year 7 French language students recently enjoyed their first ‘fete’ presentation. They presented a cultural icon from France, and lucky for us, most students chose to research delicious French food.
We enjoyed croissants, éclairs, pain au chocolatés, crêpes and macarons. The students did a wonderful job at presenting their chosen cultural icon.

Year 7 Connection Day emphasised the importance of relationships and interpersonal connections. The day was dedicated to strengthening existing bonds, forging new connections and fostering a sense of unity and belonging among the Year 7 community.
It was a wonderful day with students participating in a range of activities including; newspaper fashion show, egg drop, trivia and an afternoon of sport. The House spirit, teamwork and enthusiasm shown by all students throughout the day was great to see.
A big shout out to the Middle School Leaders who showed initiative and community spirit whilst supporting the Year 7 students.

The school leaders returned from Melbourne with many stories and ideas on how we can continue to develop the HRS community in Darwin. On their return the 14 Senior School Captains and Prefects were formally inducted at assembly as Senior School leaders.
Haileybury Rendall School was represented at the Bombing of Darwin service by our Junior School Captains, Grace Baunach and Rowan Unwin, Middle School Captains, Molly Maley and Cooper Wieck, Senior School Captains, Isiah MacDonald and Lakshya Chandra, and Boarding Captains, Max Rogers and Caitlyn Mawson.
“Attending the bombing of Darwin commemoration was a humbling experience. Hearing stories of the tragic event, coupled with the war songs from the band created a visual image of the courage and strength Territorians showed, giving me a newfound respect for the sacrifice that they made". Isaiah MacDonald - School Captain, Year 12.
Being involved in multiple activities and fundraising events is an important way for students to develop their sense of community and provides opportunities for students to work together to achieve a goal. The first of our fundraising events was held last week with the sale of roses for Valentine's Day.
With the incredible organisational skills of Ms Pickering-Tyers and the enthusiasm of our Year 12 leaders, ably assisted by students in Year 11 and Year 10, the school raised $486 which will be donated to a Heart Health charity.

Year 12 English can feel like one of the most daunting aspects of the final year of schooling, but our group this year has started in wonderful fashion with record attendance at our Wednesday Masterclasses.
Over the last few weeks, we have had over 25 English students attending these optional sessions to further improve their understanding of our text study of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic Chronicle of a Death Foretold, guided by our expert and experienced teaching team.
In these sessions, students take a deep dive into the text, complete high-quality analytical writing of their own, and gain a better understanding of what it takes to achieve their best in English.
These Masterclasses will continue to run on Wednesdays throughout the year and are open to all Year 12 English students.
The Year 12 English teaching team is so proud of the hard work and effort this group is putting in to set themselves up for English success!

As the new Director of Boarding, I have been ‘blown away’ by the courage shown by students new to boarding, as they adjust to life away from their parents and communities.
The support shown by some of the more experienced boarders has been a key-factor to helping new boarders settle in, as has the amazing support from the boarding staff. Fifteen new students completed a three-day orientation program and are adapting superbly to living and learning at Haileybury Rendall School.
We started the year with an awesome ‘Bush Tucker’ welcome meal in Week 1. Chinese New Year celebrations in Week 2, saw International boarding students, supported by our Chinese Language Teacher, Mr Shangguan and his family prepare a feast of scrumptious dumplings for all of the boarders.
Students have also been busy taking part in various weekend activities involving shopping centre and market visits; swimming at Leanyer Water Park, the Wave Pool and the newly renovated Swell water park precinct; ice skating, beach walks and trips to TIO Stadium to watch some excellent games of AFL.
Many of our boarders have also joined the activities offered by Clontarf and Stars. Students contributed valuably to the Clontarf Year 12 Camp last week, with the Stars camp coming up in Week 5.
Thanks to all of Haileybury Rendall School for the in-school support for boarding students. All together we make a great world school!
Harry Hildebrand
Director of Boarding
There were many Lunar New Year Festivals held at school on Friday, 23 February. In the morning, my class had the opportunity to wrap dumplings.
We used Ms Chen’s grandmother's recipe, which was so good! We wrapped the meat in the dumpling skin and used egg whites to seal it closed. Some were then deep-fried in Mayoema by the lovely staff, and others were used to make Xiaolongbao or soup dumplings.
It was a long process but definitely worth it in the end. We all ate as many dumplings as we could, they were so delicious!
At lunch, the talented teachers put on an incredible performance. It was so amazing to watch them get up and dance to the routine they had put a lot of hard work into. After that, the choir sang a beautiful song. This was equally amazing and performed wonderfully.
The whole day was a fantastic experience, and I can’t wait to engage in more events like this in the future. Thank you to everyone who helped organise the day!
Ashlee Caden
Year 10
The day consisted of many activities and events that intrigued every student.
We started with fun dumpling wrapping, where some definitely looked and tasted better than others. It just so happened to be coinciding with school tours. So many different teachers walked in on our extravagant chef-worthy skills. After, we were able to stuff our faces full of these delicious creations that we made, and they tasted even better due to us making them ourselves. The day continued with a wonderful lunch, mainly the crispy pork belly.
After, there was a lively performance staring our favourite teachers. It was extremely funny watching all our teachers really get into the dance with their facial expressions and moves. After the action-packed dance, there was a tranquil choir performance that seemed to calm everyone.
In the end, it was a wonderful day, and set a high bar to reach for next year, really high.

Haileybury Rendall School has a new program called ‘International Student Senior Preparation Program’. This program caters specifically to students with English as an additional language, providing intensive English lessons to equip them for mainstream classes, and the VCE curriculum.
The 'International Student Senior Preparation Program' goes beyond academics, incorporating engaging activities designed to foster a sense of belonging and enhance overall wellbeing within our school community.
At Haileybury Rendall School, we prioritise the individual needs of every student, ensuring that each feels valued, safe and welcomed.

Students in Year 9 to 12 competed in the Top End Netball Gala Day at Mararra Indoor Stadium on Wednesday, 28 February. Four Haileybury Rendall School teams competed against various Northern Territory Schools.
Each team demonstrated enthusiasm, diligence and fantastic sportsmanship, endeavouring to lift each other’s spirit in every aspect of the game. There were some amazing passes, wonderful goals and constant cheering from the sidelines.
Students successfully represented Haileybury Rendall School throughout the day, and they should be immensely proud of their efforts.
Congratulations to HRS4 (Year 9 and 10 students) who placed second in their pool.
Well done to all involved!

Year 5 is so pleased to finally have lessons in a science lab! Their enthusiasm to explore the labs is a joy to witness. This week they explored floating tea bags and practiced safely conducting an experiment.
Year 7 have learnt how to safely operate a Bunsen burner and conduct experiments safely. This week they applied their knowledge of fair tests and conducted an investigation into which ball bounces the highest.
The Year 8 Forensic Science students have started their crime scene investigation and searched the simulated crime scene for evidence. Only time will tell if the students can crack the case.
Year 12 Chemistry students have been measuring energy changes in chemical reactions, while our Year 11s are looking at measuring the number of atoms present in a substance.
The Unit 3&4 Biology students have ‘transformed’ E.coli bacteria with a green fluorescent protein gene (GFP) from a species of jelly fish (Aequorea Victoria). Check out the resulting colonies in the photos.
We are launching STEM clubs for Junior, Middle and Senior students. Interested students should look out for the posters around the school or contact Mrs Leisha Skilton for more information.
Year 10s – check the myLearning announcement for details about participating in this year’s Brain Bee.
Leisha Skilton

As part of the topic of DNA manipulation techniques and applications, the Unit 3&4 Biology students ‘transformed’ E.coli bacteria with a green fluorescent protein gene (GFP) from a species of jelly fish (Aequorea Victoria). Under appropriate conditions, a small circular section of DNA that contains the gene is taken up by the bacterial cells.
When grown on a specific sugar medium (arabinose), the bacteria will synthesis the green fluorescent protein. This allows them to ‘glow’ under a UV light.
The students were successful in their bacterial transformation, which resulted in a number of satellite colonies taking up the jellyfish gene. The practical investigation allowed the students to understand the process of bacterial transformation and its applications to research and medicine, such as the production of recombinant insulin (Humulin).
Students will be assessed on the underlying theory associated with the practical in their upcoming SAC.

A representative from ANU will be visiting HRS to speak with interested Year 11 and 12 students about the application process and timeline for direct undergraduate applications through the early-entry program. Interested students are encouraged to attend an information session during Lunch time. An additional session will be offered from 5pm for students and parents.
Students will be introduced to the online platform, The Careers Department. Students will experience a virtual introduction to the online resource and will commence the completion of their personal profile.
The tool with be used by both Year 9 and 10 students as part of the subject-selection process for 2025. Year 10 students will also be required to complete online modules, in preparation for Work Experience in Term 3.
A representative from the University of South Australia will present to interested students about undergraduate courses, applications and entry requirements.
Work Experience is a compulsory part of the Year 10 program. Students are encouraged to consider their interests and determine an industry or occupation that they would like to experience or know more about.
Students will be required to contact potential work host places/business to arrange their own work experience placement. Information and a work booklet with activities will be completed via PEX lessons in Term 2.

The 2024 All-Clontarf Year 12 Leadership Camp commenced in Week 4, drawing around 40 Academy Members from various Academies including Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Casuarina Senior College, Taminmin College, Palmerston Senior College & Haileybury Rendall School.
The camp is a vital part of our senior’s program and is a kick-start to their Year 12 journey. It provides Academy Members with a sense of agency and the opportunity to see that they are a part of a bigger picture, with others who are in a similar position. As they enter their most important year of schooling, this camp provides Academy Members with the reassurance, confidence and guidance that we are all in this together.
The camp began with a Year 12 dinner at Dripstone Cliffs on Sunday evening, setting the tone for the official breakfast the next morning at The H – Hotel on Mitchell. The breakfast was well attended by Clontarf Year 12's and staff, as well as several Clontarf partners, Government and Education Department representatives. Rahiri Bedggood, who emceed last year’s HRS Clontarf Awards Night, was the MC of the morning and was again impressive.
The group then attended the Bombing of Darwin Ceremony at the Darwin Convention Centre. They learnt about the significant impacts this attack had on the city of Darwin, and Australia as a whole. An important community event showcasing our Academy Members and exposing them to another great experience. The camp continued its way to Batchelor. Here, the group participated in employment sessions led by our Employment Officers, Phillip Wills & Anthony Vallejo. Elements of fun were also included with activities in the afternoon, followed by a home-cooked dinner.
The final day started with morning training and a traditional Clontarf BBQ breakfast. We finished with pre-planning for the Year 12 major end of year trips and plenty of smiling faces.
Duane Von Senden
Academy Director
Stars at Haileybury Rendall School has welcomed new staff - Amanda, Serena & Janet. Amanda has arrived at HRS with 8 years of experience working with Stars Foundation; Serena is an alumnus of the 2017 Casuarina Senior College Stars program; Janet is a former AFLW player from Gold Coast Suns and Hawthorn Hawks.
The Stars room has been revamped with an exciting new look, with Stars classes and activities beginning in Week 3. The girls have been participating in art, making slime, creating friendship bracelets (inspired by Taylor Swift’s Australian Tour) and practicing basketball for Friday morning activities to ensure they are ready for the Stars Basketball Carnival in Week 9.
Year 12 Stars students have also participated in the Year 12 Stars Induction Day along with the other Year 12 Stars from other senior schools around the Darwin and Katherine areas.
Lots more adventures to come for Stars as the year goes on!

Year 10
The day consisted of many activities and events that intrigued every student.
