Adventures in 'Keysie'

At the beginning of Term 3, Year 10 students Sam and Madison started their exchange adventure in Melbourne. In this week’s newsletter Madison provides us with an insight into her experiences.

Melbourne Exchange

For the past five weeks, Sam and I have been living our best lives. From participating in different sports, subjects, House activities, and tourist attractions we have been trying to experience everything Melbourne has to offer.

This week we have reached the halfway mark which is very bittersweet, these past five weeks have flown, and we couldn’t be more grateful for this amazing opportunity.

The first few weeks at school were overwhelming as we were getting to know our peers and teachers, finding our way around the school and navigating the Melbourne lifestyle. However, now we are settled and having the best time. We have made great friends, connected with our teachers, and are exploring everything this city has to offer.

My favourite subject by far is Unit 1 and 2 Business Management. I have the best teacher (Mr Thomas Snaith) that you could ask for and a small and lively class – where I have made my closest friends. Something very different is being able to leave campus at recess and lunch as I am exchanging at the City campus, right in Melbourne’s CBD. Each recess and lunch, my friends and I either walk around Melbourne or we eat our food in the beautiful Flagstaff gardens.

Sam and I have both indulged in the school sport area of Haileybury. Each Tuesday we travel to Keysborough from our respective campuses and participate in different activities. For the first few weeks, I experienced the last section of the netball season and I’m now joining in different House activities. Sam enjoys the swimming program in Keysborough’s indoor pool and has taken up a new sport playing water polo.

A highlight so far was definitely Tuesday’s OHA (Old Haileyburian Association) Carnival Day and House Gala Day. OHA Carnival allowed us to enjoy games, movies, yoga, Pilates, carnival games, and free food. We got to make memories and new friendships and explore the very large ‘Keysie’ campus. House Gala involved a talent show, house debating, writing, literature, and more. We loved watching the talent show and seeing people’s personalities show and had many laughs.

Sam and I have both been to a few AFL games and been out to different Melbourne landmarks. We will definitely be sad to leave, but over the remainder of the term we are going to enjoy and soak up every minute.
